How freight shipping cost is calculated

Every freight rate is built the same way. Once you know the five parts, the estimate above makes sense — and so does your final quote.

1

Start with mode and lane

Your shipping mode and route set the base rate. Ocean FCL is priced per container. LCL, air, and express are priced on weight. The same pallet from China to the US costs far less by sea than by air.

2

Find the chargeable weight

Carriers bill the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Light, bulky cargo is charged on the space it fills, not what it weighs. The calculator works this out on every mode for you.

3

Add surcharges and handling

Fuel surcharges, terminal handling, and documentation sit on top of the base rate. They are easy to underestimate, so a headline freight quote is rarely the full cost.

4

Layer in customs and insurance

Customs duty, broker fees, and cargo cover are the last pieces. Our customs broker partners handle clearance, and Value Protect insures the goods in transit.

5

Confirm with a live quote

Market rates move daily with capacity, fuel, and demand. Plan with the estimate, then send your lane to our partner network for a firm, bookable rate — usually within 2 hours.

Each mode is priced on a different basis. Here is when each one wins, and where to find real 2026 rates by lane.

What goes into your freight rate

A headline rate is never the whole cost. These six pieces turn a base rate into the all-in price you actually pay.

Freight calculator questions, answered

How freight rates are built, what the estimate includes, and how to turn it into a firm quote.

How much does it cost to ship a container from China to the USA?

In 2026, a 40ft container from China to the US West Coast typically runs $2,700–$4,500 in ocean freight, based on market averages. Peak season and tight capacity push the top of that range higher. On top of the ocean rate you pay fuel surcharges, origin and destination handling, documentation, and customs. Use the calculator above for your exact lane, then send it to us for a firm, partner-sourced quote.

How is freight shipping cost calculated?

Freight cost starts with your mode and lane. Ocean FCL is priced per container, while LCL, air, and express are priced on chargeable weight. Chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, so light, bulky cargo costs more than its scale weight suggests. The calculator then adds surcharges, handling, documentation, and customs to estimate an all-in range.

How accurate is this freight rate calculator?

The calculator uses 2026 market-average rates, adjusted for your lane, season, and commodity. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a contract. Real rates move daily with capacity, fuel, and demand. For a firm number you can book, send the lane and cargo details and our partner network returns a live quote.

What is the difference between FCL, LCL, air, and express rates?

FCL (full container) is priced per box and suits large or heavy shipments. LCL (less than container load) is priced per cubic metre and fits smaller ocean cargo. Air freight is priced per chargeable kg and moves in days, not weeks. Express courier costs the most per kg but delivers fastest, door to door. The calculator compares all four so you can weigh cost against speed.

How much does air freight cost per kg in 2026?

Air freight usually runs $2.50–$8.00 per chargeable kg in 2026, depending on the lane and season. Express courier service costs more, and specialized cargo such as pharma or dangerous goods sits at the higher end. Because airlines bill on chargeable weight, low-density cargo can cost more than its actual weight suggests.

Why is my freight quote different from the calculator estimate?

The estimate reflects average market rates, while a quote reflects live capacity on your exact dates. Spot rates during peak season can sit well above contracted rates. Your commodity, packaging, insurance, and any special handling also shift the final number. That is why we confirm every estimate with a firm quote before you book.
