Transit time questions shippers ask us
How do you calculate ocean transit time?
Add every stage, not just the sailing. The calculator splits each shipment into inland pickup, port handling, the main transit leg, customs clearance and last-mile delivery. It then totals them door to door. For ocean cargo it counts 1–3 days for pickup, 1–2 for port handling, 2–5 for customs and 1–3 for delivery. The main leg uses typical sailing times between the two regions.
What is the difference between port-to-port and door-to-door transit time?
Port-to-port is only the time between the loading port and the discharge port. Door-to-door adds the land steps at both ends: pickup at your supplier, port handling, customs clearance and delivery to your address. In the calculator, the “Main Transit” row is the port-to-port part and “Total Door-to-Door” is the full trip. For ocean cargo, the calculator adds 5–13 days for pickup, port handling, customs and delivery on top of the main leg.
What causes shipping delays and adds days to transit time?
Most extra days come from transshipment, port congestion, customs exams, missed cutoffs, peak season and holidays. Transshipment adds a second vessel and a wait at the hub port. For port congestion, plan a buffer of 3–5 days. On LCL, a customs exam can delay release from the CFS by 1–5 days. Miss an LCL loading cutoff by a day, and your cargo can wait 5–10 days for the next container.
How many days does the calculator allow for customs clearance?
In this calculator, customs clearance takes 2–5 days for ocean cargo, 2–4 days for air freight and 1–2 days for express. They are planning buffers: routine clearance with complete papers is often faster, while an exam or a missing document adds days. A missing paper, a vague product name or an exam holds the cargo until it is fixed. Send clean invoices, packing lists and HS codes early, so the licensed customs broker can file on time.
Why does air freight take days door to door when the flight takes hours?
The flight is only one stage of the trip. On top of the air leg, the calculator adds pickup 1–2 days, handling 1, customs 2–4 and delivery 1–2. So the ground stages alone take 5–9 days. The air leg uses typical air transit times between the two regions. Express adds fewer days on the ground: pickup 0–1, customs 1–2 and delivery 0–1.
Read the transit estimate for what it is, and what it leaves out
The calculator maps the typical stages of a door-to-door move. It covers inland pickup, port handling, the main transit leg, routine customs clearance and final delivery. That makes it a planning baseline, not a booked schedule. Your real dates come from the carrier booking on your lane.
Some steps sit outside any schedule-based estimate. Booking cutoffs close before the vessel departs, so a late handover rolls your cargo to the next sailing. LCL cargo also waits at the CFS while the shared container fills. Customs exams, missing documents and delivery bookings can add time at destination. Build your plan around those gaps, not just the transit leg.
- Treat the result as a planning baseline, not a booked schedule.
- Confirm the booking cutoff and document deadlines for your chosen sailing.
- Allow for the CFS wait on LCL and time to book final delivery.
Work back from your deadline, not forward from the sailing
Start with the date the cargo must arrive. Then work backwards through delivery, clearance, the main transit leg and the booking cutoff. The date your goods are packed, documented and ready to hand over anchors the whole chain. That is your cargo-ready date. Share it in every quote request, because providers build the schedule around it.
Add margin where the calendar works against you. Peak season, holidays and port congestion stretch every stage at once, so pad the plan before you book. When the buffer no longer fits, compare modes instead of squeezing the schedule. Air freight starts to make sense once the deadline is fixed and the ocean margin has run out.
- Set the cargo-ready date first and share it in every quote request.
- Pad for peak season, holidays and congestion before you book.
- Reprice the shipment by air when the ocean buffer disappears.
